Get to know the polar low
 ( Photo: met.no/NOAA. )
We will visit the Tromsø office of the Norwegian Meteorological Institute, which was established in 1921. It has developed a special expertise in polar meteorology and prepares warnings for polar low pressures, unique meteorological phenomena with challenging forecasting characteristics. In addition, the office runs a daily sea ice service for the Barents Sea.
The office is also part of the Norwegian Avalanche Warning Service, where it provides mountain weather forecasts, systematic snow-cover diagnostic tools, and develops avalanche warnings together with forecasters from other collaborating organisations.
We will visit the office and meet forecasters and researchers who will explain how they work to understand the polar climate and its influence on avalanche danger here in the Arctic.
